You can stage a lively boarding action with two pieces of paper, a few obstacles, and a small pirate crew. The key is making the connection between the ships matter. Players should be deciding where to cross, what to protect, and when to leave.
Draw two useful decks
Outline two decks side by side. Mark the rail, a central mast, a hatch, and a raised stern area on each. Leave enough clear space for miniature bases to move. Represent cargo with a few boxes or tokens, and explain which objects block movement or provide cover under your chosen rules.
Add two crossing points: a broad gangplank near the cargo and a rope connection near the stern. Decide how each works before play. Make the rope route an alternative with a clear cost, not an unexpected trap.
Pick an objective beyond defeating the crew
- Recover the chart: Someone must reach the captain's desk and return with a map.
- Hold the gangplank: Keep a crossing open while allies move valuable cargo.
- Release the ships: Remove the boarding lines before an approaching reef becomes a problem.
Choose one as the main objective. A second can become an optional reward, giving the party a reason to take a risk without making the scene confusing.
Give the opposing crew different priorities
Assign a lookout, a defender, and a leader. The lookout calls attention to movement; the defender guards the objective; the leader offers a bargain when the situation turns. You can use existing stat blocks from your game and let the figures communicate these roles visually.
Change one thing mid-encounter
After a clear warning, a cargo stack shifts or one boarding line gives way. Move the relevant token and let players react. Avoid changing every obstacle at once: one development is enough to refresh the problem.
The 12-piece Pirate Set supplies a varied fantasy crew for this setup. YourNeighborKnight Minis sculpted the figures, with 28mm and 32mm options available in the listing.
