America Makes announced a series of 3D Printing for Drones student experiences ahead of National Manufacturing Day on October 2, 2026. The half-day program was planned for Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Alabama, and California.
Learning through a design challenge
The initiative introduces high school students to additive manufacturing and drone technology through guided design, build, and flight activities. The announcement highlights tradeoffs involving weight, batteries, manufacturability, and reliability.
It builds on a summer camp at Missouri University of Science and Technology, held with Innovate Learning. The program includes mentor-led exercises, prototyping, and safety instruction.
Resources for educators
America Makes also links to a free curriculum with several duration options. Access is handled through its Community Engagement Tools portal, which asks educators to request an access code.
Our takeaway is the strength of giving a print a purpose: a design challenge makes it easier to discuss why shape, mass, and iteration matter. Educators can consult the original program for its requirements.
